Turning the Arrow Back

My favorite reminder: Every time I open my mouth, I say something about myself.

We all know the sting of judgment, it starts like this:

You are arrogant.

You are stupid.

You are selfish.

And so, when turning the arrow back, he who condemns is exposed. At the outset of my journey this was hard to see, but now it’s almost immediate. Within hours, sometimes within minutes, I fall into my own ditch and my arrogant, stupid, selfish self is revealed once again. But that is Grace.

There is another benefit from this reminder. When someone points a finger and says, “You are stupid . . .”, know they are speaking about themselves. A wonderful sense of peace arises from knowing that other does not know me, does not see me.

We are looking in mirrors.
